The Red Team's creative coffee table is functional too: inside the ark hides a mini-fridge for their favorite drinks.

The Blue Team's coffee table is topped with glass tile. A glass block-base allows accent lighting underneath to shine through.

    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • The Red Team makes a door to cover their refrigerator from 1-inch plywood and attaches it with hinges to the side of the ark.

    • Braces for the shelves are made from 1-inch blocks cut from a 2 x 4 using a circular saw. These braces are nailed at each end of the table. Then, the shelves are inserted above the braces and nailed into place.

    • A marker is used to draw lines on the table sides to make them look like wood planks (figure A).

    • The top, sides and shelves of the coffee table is then covered using Wood Sheen Rubbing Oil & Stain finish in Plantation Walnut.

    • The refrigerator is placed inside, the miniature house is positioned on top and this ark is ready to set sail.
    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • The Blue Team attaches four small lights to the bottom of the tabletop and then secures the top to the base with screws (figure B). The holes are pre-drilled and 1-inch screws are used to ensure they don't drill into the glass blocks.

    • The tiles are attached to the tabletop using hot glue gun.

    • Trim is added to table edges with an iron (figure C) and then any excess is removed with an edging tool.

    • After the entire tabletop is sanded and stained, the project is complete.

Score summary: The judges praised the creativity of the Red Team and liked their use of materials, particularly the copper. There was some concern, however, about the copper's sharp edges. The glass and free-form shape of the Blue Team's project had strong appeal for the judges. They thought its functionality and post-modern design would fit in well in a variety of rooms. The contemporary look won over two of the three judges and the Blue Team was declared the winner.
