    Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • Shelves for the sides of the table are cut from 1/2" oak plywood with a table saw. Two shelves will be 17 x 28" and two will be 8 x 28".

    • The tabletop is made from laminate flooring that snaps together (figure A). The top is then measured -- six feet long and 28 inches wide -- and cut with a circular saw.

    • The Red Team wants a miniature house to sit atop the ark table. They make the house by building a frame from birch 1 x 1s and 2 x 1s.

    • The frame is wrapped and nailed in cedar strips and then a piece of copper is fashioned for the roof (figure B). The copper is secured to the house frame with screws.

Ed's tip: You have several options you can choose to dress up the edges of a plywood table. You can use decorative molding like rope or veneer. Once the molding is tacked into place with finishing nails, stain it to match the table. Or you could try iron-on trimming. Simply press on with a hot iron and then trim it with a craft knife or an edge trimmer. This can be stained to match, too.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • The team lays out 3 x 3" red and black tile to create a checkerboard design on their tabletop (figure C).

    • In order inlay the tile, they use a router to clear the middle section of the tabletop. To make sure the lines are straight, a level - any type of straight edge will work- is clamped down as a guide for the router (figure D).

    • A chisel and hammer help finish the spots where the router missed and then the inside of the square is sanded with a finishing sander.
