Two teams of Catholic priests square off to see who can build the best coffee table in just eight hours. There's a lot of work to do before any of them can kick their feet up and enjoy their new creation! The teams: Catholic priests ready to put their carpentry and building skills to the test. The project: A coffee table The Timeframe: 8 hours (9.a.m. - 5 p.m.) Red Team Father Patrick Brownell Father David Boettner Father Christian Mathis Blue Team Father Joe Campbell Father Brent Shelton Father Ragan Schriver Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) - The Red Team chooses a Noah's Ark theme for their table with an opening for a mini-refrigerator and two shelves on each side. First, they measure the refrigerator (19 x 19 x 18-1/2) to determine how high and deep the table must be.
- Then, the team cuts 1/2" oak plywood down the center with a table saw. These two pieces will be used as the sides of the table. Each is exactly two-feet high. They use a jigsaw to cut the ark shape out of a second piece of plywood (figure A). The bottom of the ark will serve as the base of the table and measures 28" across.
- After sanding the edges of the table, a chop saw is used to cut 2 x 4s into eight braces -- each 28" -- to support the plywood table sides.
Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) - The Blue Team plans an "amoeba"-shaped table with a checkerboard tile design on top and a base of glass blocks. They begin by cutting oak 1 x 4s with a circular saw. These pieces will frame the front, back and sides of their table.
- Next, plastic tracking for the glass blocks are cut to fit the frame. Four are cut to 25 inches for the front and back. Four are cut to 23 inches for the sides (figure B).
- The plastic pieces are then attached to their respective wood pieces. The plastic pieces go on top and bottom of each side (figure C).
- The bottom of the base is nailed together with a nail gun to form a square.
- Finally, L brackets are attached to the four corner pieces and to the 23-inch oak pieces. Using the brackets will add needed support to the table.
