Children often dream of one day becoming a policeman or a fireman -- but for this competition, the firefighters and policemen get to be kids! The two teams will compete to build the best sandbox, and only one will be declared the winner once the dust -- make that sand -- finally settles. The teams: Police and firefighters from Indianapolis The project: Sand box The Timeframe: 8 hours (9.a.m. - 5 p.m.) What if the warehouse catches on fire? No problem. What if someone tries to steal the jigsaw? No problem. But, a sandbox in just eight hours? We'll soon find out if these men have the skills to get the job done. Let's meet the teams! Red Team John Borel Mack Mullins Frank Lemons Blue Team Tony Gatto Brian Morris Mike Woida Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) - The Red Team decides on a six-sided, castle-themed sandbox with turrets, flags and a drawbridge.
- They begin by cutting pressure-treated 2 x 6s with a chop saw for the castle towers (figure A). The 2 x 6s are then ripped at a 30-degree angle with a table saw so that they will fit together to form a six-sided tower.
- A frame of six 2 x 6s is secured with a nail gun and then, decking boards for the base are attached to the frame. A handheld circular saw is used to trim the boards flush (figure B).
Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) - The Blue Team also conceives of a castle sandbox. They want to build a hexagonal box with a castle facade on three sides and a removable cover.
- They start their frame by cutting pressure-treated 2 x 6s with a chop saw. The pieces are then alternately overlapped and connected with metal brackets to form a perfect square. To add support, a 2 x 4 is cut and attached in the middle of the frame.
- Next, the team cuts four 4 x 4 posts and secures them to the inside corners ( figure C) of the frame with five-inch carriage bolts.
