The Red Team's project had an intimacy despite its size. The design allowed a cook to be surrounded by friends as food was prepared.

The Blue Team paid excellent attention to detail with their Western-themed concept and their project included lots of storage and counter space.

    • A 40 x 20-inch platform of pressure-treated wood is placed underneath the island to support the refrigerator.

    • The Red Team then adds decorative lights and rope to their posts and lattice to the sides of the island (figure A).

    • Once they have measured and cut plywood to hold the microwave underneath the island, these McNairs are ready to call it a day.
    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • Thinking they'd like to cover their outdoor kitchen, the team screws on corrugated metal roofing (figure B).

    • Plywood and Formica are then cut for the countertops and adhesive is painted on to attach the materials. Once the countertops are placed atop the cabinets, a router is used to finish the edges (figure C). A hole for the sink is cut out with a jigsaw.

    • Next, a box of birch is assembled to serve as a refrigerator stand and more lattice is nailed to the sides of the structure.

    • With time running out, the Blue Team adds some last finishing touches including: cedar flower boxes and a utensil rack.

Scoring summary: The judges liked the communal feel of the Red Team's project and praised the craftsmanship apparent in the construction of the lattice and decking. They appreciated the non-slip deck and the integration of appliances of the Blue Team, but in the end, Red won over two of the three judges. In both instances, the Red Team scored higher in creativity.
