    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Red Team designs a diamond-shaped island with built-in shelves and lots of seating room (figure A). First, they measure and cut pressure-treated 2x6s into eight 72-inch pieces on the mitre saw. Then, the pieces are nailed together with a backboard to make four 12-foot pieces. These four pieces are used to construct a square platform (figure B).

    • After measuring and cutting eight pressure-treated 4x4 posts, the posts are attached to the platform with lag screws.

    • Simpson Strong Ties are screwed into the corners of the platform to support the weight of cabinets.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Blue Team envisions a u-shaped deck with pre-made cabinets on each side and room for a grill in the middle. After positioning the pre-made cabinets to serve as a base for the countertop, pressure-treated 2x4s are cut and nailed into a frame. Floor joists are added for support.

    • The team wants the cabinets to have an antique look. And they get just the imperfections they're after by banging away with chains, rods and hammers (figure C). Once stain is added, the cabinets are completely transformed.
