    Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • The Red Team first measures and cuts the back posts that will hold a light over the mailbox.

    • The sides of the posts are sanded smooth, then a clear polyurethane stain is rubbed on (figure A).

    • Oak is cut into 8 pieces measuring 25" each and the ends are mitered at 45-degrees.

    • Two frames are assembled out of eight pieces and are nailed together.

    • One frame is placed on the plywood platform and set in the four post and glass sets (figure B).

    Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • The Blue Team starts construction of a lazy susan that will support a rotating top. First, the team adds a 2 x 8 piece of wood to the top of the mitered 2 x 4s.

    • Next, the team drills a hole through the piece and adds a 3/4" rod measuring 6' long, through the hole to the base (figure C). The team marks the position of the rod on the base, then drills a hole.

    • Copper post caps are used for roofs for the houses in the miniature village that will rest on the rotating top.

    • Nuts and washers are added for areas where the threaded rod touches wood and a Simpson strong tie is added at the top of the four mitered 2 x 4s.

    • Edges on the dragon head is filed smooth, then slots are cut into the PVC pipe to hold the head and tail pieces in place.

    • Two plywood castle frames are traced, cut with a jigsaw to fit around the mailbox (figure D), then sanded.

    • The 3' rotating top is cut from plywood using the "string and pencil method".

    • Village houses are created from remnant 2 x 4s, then the team traces, cuts and sands flags from sheet metal.

    • The team spray paints the houses and roofs, then covers the rotating top with green fabric.
