Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - To symbolize their pride in "Dollywood", the team decides to add a butterfly (part of the Dollywood logo) to their structure. First, the team creates a paper template, then transfers the design by spray-painting it on wood. A scroll saw is used to cut the design, then the butterflies are painted pink.
- Holes are drilled through the centers of the counter circles for the large green stems to fit into (figure A).
- Doors are created for the cabinet front and attached, and 1" x 6" cedar planks are attached to the front and back sides (figure B).
- Metal petals are drilled into the wood frames, and leaf shelves are attached with L-brackets.
- Next, the team paints the countertop with a yellow wash and adds the red circles on top of the petals.
- The butterflies are added, then brackets supporting hanging baskets are added at various spots.
- Walnut stain is brushed onto the tops of the flower pot tables and the sides are painted with a brick-red wash.
- Tools hooks are added to the stems to add to the functionality of the piece.
Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - The Blue Team decides to add a bin to their cart. The wood is cut and assembled with glue and nails.
- Next, the team applies and grouts sandstone tile to the top of the cart (figure C).
- The front panel is measured, then notched to fit around the handles (figure D).
- Wheels are painted, then added to the cart. The bin is inserted and attached, and a bin handle is added.
Score Summary: The teams finish and await scoring. The judges are impressed with the imaginative approach taken by the Red Team, although the Blue Team's craftsmanship, whimsical touches and functionality were also noted. In the end, however, it was the "Alice in Wonderland" feel (as one judge put it), that planted the highest scored with the Red Team. Base scores are determined using a 1-10 scale, 10 being the highest. For complete details on the judging/scoring process, click here.
