Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.) - The Red Team cuts and bevels posts to create the flower stems that will extend from the potting bench base.
- A base is created by connecting lumber cut at 45-degree angles (figure A), then marks are made on the two bottom circles where 4 x 4 squares will be placed. The squares are then nailed to the circles with a nail gun.
- Then, the copper petals are cut with a scroll saw for a more finished edge. The petal pattern is traced onto 1 inch plywood and cut (figure B). Twelve petals total are cut using a scroll saw.
- The middle counter support is added between the two "flower pots".
- Next, the team hollows the wooden petals, leaving a frame that will cover the edges of the metal petals. A router is used to round all petal edges.
- The team cuts more lumber for the frame, then arranges all pieces to be nailed together.
Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.) - The Blue Team first designs a template for an intricate wheel, then traces the design to wood. A jig saw is used to cut the shape (figure C).
- Matching curved flower stems are cut from pressure-treated lumber, then sanded. These stems will be the cart handles.
- Next, additional supports (figure D) are added within frame to support the plywood top.
