    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 1 a.m.)

    • The Red Team plucked their design inspiration straight from the garden: a potting bench that looks like two giants flower pots, with a sink counter in the center.

    • With the design in place, the Red Team cuts 1" plywood into two circles for the top (figure A). One top is slightly smaller than the other and will be placed at a lower height. After the tops are cut, the teams uses an electric sander to smooth the surfaces.

    • Next, the team cuts petals. A paper template is made, then the petal shape is traced onto decorative aluminum sheets and copper mesh.

    • The petal shapes are cut from the material using tin snips (figure B).

    • Smaller circles are cut for the "bottoms" of the pots.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Blue Team designs a more traditional potting bench design that looks like a "pushcart" -- with touches of whimsy.

    • First, the Blue Team starts building the cart frame. The ends of 2 x 4s are mitered (figure C) and joined together to create the bottom frame.

    • The same cutting technique is used to build a top frame identical to the bottom, then two are joined together and bottom braces (figure D) are added for stability.
