    Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • The team pre-drills holes into the metal roofing pieces, then attached the metal to the top piece of the armoire inside the shelving units (figure A).

    • Molding for the top of the armoire is created with a planer, and eight 1 x 2s are cut to be used as grooved shelf supports.

    • Shelf supports are attached, then various lengths of trim is nailed into place.

    • The team cuts foam and grey fabric for the seat cover, then cuts acrylic squares for the shelves.

    • The top piece of the armoire is added for full enclosure, then the team begins sanding all rough edges.

    • Next, the team cuts 2 x 4s to 19" to be used as bench handles.

    • Lights are attached to the top of the armoire and doors are cut for the side shelving units.

    • The team attaches "hide-away" hinges to the inner surfaces of each door (figure B), at approximately 2-1/2" from the top and 2-1/2" from the bottom.

Ed's tip: Use specialty hinges for upscale furniture projects -- like the armoire featured in today's challenge. Half overlay hinges fit in a corner between two pieces of wood. Another choice is butterfly hinges, which look like butterfly wings.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • The Blue Team spreads laminate adhesive on the underside of the decorative laminate and tabletop, then waits a few minutes before attaching the two. A J-Roller is used to apply pressure and adhere the pieces.

    • Next, the team applies wood laminate strips to the edges of the armoire frame. An iron is used to melt the adhesive (figure C) and create a cohesive bond. Excess laminate is trimmed.

    • Next, plywood is cut and sanded before being added to the front edge of the tabletop.

    • The sink is placed upside down on the laminated tabletop while the size and position is marked. A jigsaw is used to cut the sink opening in the tabletop.

    • The sink is attached to the tabletop with screws, and the tabletop is then nailed to the armoire.

    • Metal rods are used to suspend a shelf inside the top left side of the armoire (figure D).

    • Lumber is cut into three pieces 20" long and 18" wide.
