    The Project: Above-average Armoire

    The Timeframe: 8 hours (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.)

These guys select, design and build the projects seen by many woodworkers across America. Although the teams know about fine woodworking, how will they do with an 8-hour time constraint? Before we find out, let's meet the teams!

    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 1 a.m.)

    • The Red Team designs an armoire with decorative shelving on the front and enclosed shelving on the sides. Its unique design will also include a padded bench seat.

    • First, 1" birch plywood is ripped to various lengths (figure A) for the top section of the frame.

    • Then, the team uses a nail gun to attach the two middle supports to the back piece (figure B).

    • Next, the team nails two side enclosures to the front side to enclose the side shelves.

    • The small refrigerator is measured so piece can be cut for the bottom and the mini-fridge can be housed within the armoire.
    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Blue Team designs a contemporary armoire with an arched top design. Its design will include a sink, mini-fridge and shelves.

    • The team first measures the dimension of the mini-fridge and sink to determine the height and width of the armoire design.

    • Next, the team creates an armoire base by trimming a pre-made cabinet with a jig saw.

    • The, 1" plywood is measured and cut with the table saw into pieces for the side, back, top and bottom surfaces.

    • Then, the team uses a router saw to make 1/2" rabbets (figure C) on one edge of the side pieces.

    • A nail gun is used to nail all pieces of the armoire together.

    • The team removes the small drawer from the cabinet and covers the front surface with a false front (figure D).

Ed's tip: A good hardwood should be selected for a stained armoire, but almost any type of wood can be used for an armoire that will be painted. Knotty pine is an inexpensive selection that can be disguised with paint, while finished pine is better for a stained project. Red Oak, maple and cherry are good selections for projects left unstained or unpainted.
