The judges agreed that the Red Team's use of copper tubing demonstrated thinking that was "out of the box". The judges commented that the bed's modern elegance would look right at home in a contempory loft.

The judges praised the Blue Team's attention to detail -- from the canvas "sails" to the "No Girls" sign. The finished bed earned the higher scores for it's whimsical, "Tom Sawyer" feel that left one judge longing for a second childhood!

    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • A hand plane is used to plane the corner edges of the boarder, then batting and fabric is stapled to the boarder top.

    • A table saw is used to rip plywood for the headboard, and decorative trim is traced onto the headboard surface.

    • Maroon fabric is draped along the canopy corners (figure A) and tied with white rope.

    • A jig saw is used to cut decorative trim on headboard (figure B).

    • White canopy is removed from the frame, and the team adds grommets to the canopy corners. White fabric is added to the corner poles, underneath the maroon fabric.

    • New flags are created, the canopy is re-attached, and the flags are inserted through the grommets.

    • Batting is added to the headboard and wrapped in fabric that matches the boarder. Finally, the team attaches the headboard to complete the project.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • The Blue Team adds boards of various lengths to the sides and back of the bed to create an imperfect tree house look (figure C) and enclose the frame. Many of the boards are added in a haphazard, crooked fashion to add whimsy.

    • Additional braces and metal brackets are added to increase the overall strength before the roof is added.

    • After the roof of the bed is constructed and secured, the edges of the bed are sanded.

    • A drop cloth is draped over the roof (figure D), pulled taut, and attached with staples. The drop cloth is cut through the middle at the front and attached to the sides with staples.

    • Next, a router with an edging bit is used to give the bed's front surface a smooth edge, and trim pieces are added to the drawer.

    • A "No Girls" sign is painted and chiseled, then blue lighting cord is attached to the edges of the bed.

    • Then, the team attaches another drop cloth to the front of the frame to be used as a "door". The team adds rope to the inside of the front top frame, wraps it around the drop cloth, and threads it through the eye hooks to allow the door to be pulled down.

    • To complete the project, the Red Team adds a mattress and sheets to the bed.

Score Summary: Upon close inspection, both beds were sturdy, well-constructed and creative designs. The judges gave high scores to both projects in all areas. It was a tough decision and the scores were very close. In the end, the judges said the Blue Team's project brought out the kid in all of them. The Blue Team passes inspection with the highest score!

Base scores are determined using a 1-10 scale, 10 being the highest. For complete details on the judging/scoring process, click here.
