    Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • Connect cross pieces of long copper pipes by soldering the pieces to copper fittings (figure A). These pieces will cross the center of the canopy frame and attach to additional fittings at the copper bed posts.

    • Once connected, the cross piece unit is connect at the corners to elbow joints. Then, eye bolts are used to secure the copper bed posts to the frame. The team uses a torch to solder all remaining joints.

    • Next, the 15-3/4" x 8" plywood is cut down to two pieces measuring 15-3/4" x 63" and four 15-3/4" x 43" pieces. These pieces are used to construct the base of the bed.

    • The base pieces are connected with corner wedges.

    • Plywood is cut into a 62" x 7' piece for the mattress deck (figure B).

    • White fabric is cut for the canopy and sewn on the sewing machine.

Ed's Tip: Bending copper pipes is easy work with the use of a pipe bender. Simply put the pipe in the tool and bend the pipe on the floor while using a sweeping motion. Keep in mind that there are two kinds of pipes: the thicker "L" tubing (indicated by blue writing), which bends well; and "M" tubing (indicated by red writing), which is thin and doesn't bend well.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • The Blue Team attaches casters to a sheet of 1" plywood. A total of six casters are used to distribute the weight evenly.

    • To create the rolling drawer, the team rips 1" plywood to several lengths.

    • Two 2 x 2s are cut to go around the wheels of the box for support (figure C).

    • Then, the team cuts four 2 x 4s to fit the notches of the bed fram. The 2 x 4s are attached to the notches on two of the posts (figure D) and attached with Simpson strong ties to complete one side of the frame.

    • Next, the storage box is assembled with the uses of small Simpson strong ties. Two larger pieces of plywood are used for the sides (approximately 73" long) and the two shortest (anoput 48" long) are used for the sides. One piece measuring 73" x 48" is used for the bottom of the box.
