Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - The Red Team creates a frame for the door frame, then paints the pieces black.
- Two pieces of smoke-colored roofing are cut for the doors, then a stand is constructed for the telescope to sit on.
- The team attaches the pulley to the middle of the roof and the roof door frame is attached to the middle door frame with two hinges. Hinges are screwed into the door frames.
- A star stencil is used to add silver stars across the inner walls of the structure (figure A).
- Clear roofing is attached to the roof door.
- The doors are added, but don't seem to work. The team removes the doors and moves forward.
- The rope is added to the pulley and door (figure B) and is secured to the back of the planetarium.
- The roofing on the corner of the roof is secured and trimmed.
Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - The Blue Team creates a double beam to which the roof frames are attached. Strap hinges (figure C) are used to attach the frames, yet allow for easy opening.
- The roof is lifted atop the shed, and white synthetic roofing material is nailed into place. Material is cut and used to cover the open ends of the roof.
- The team adds eye hooks at the top and middle of each roof support beam and at the bottom of the roof flaps.
- To complete the project, rope is looped through the eye hooks and secured with knots to hold the flaps up for star-gazing (figure D).
Score Summary: The judges praised the whimsical stars on the interior of the Red Team's planetarium, as well as its open roof and mobility. The judges thought the Blue Team had devised a clever pulley system and a sturdy design. It was the obstructive center roof beam on the Blue Team's planetarium, however, that lost them valuable design points. The Red Team is declared the winner! Base scores are determined using a 1-10 scale, 10 being the highest. For complete details on the judging/scoring process, click here.
