Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - The Red Team adds right-angle metal braces to strengthen the top corners of the doorways.
- Then, the team bends plywood into a half-circle and hammers to the top of the lawnmower hanger. Next, the painted corrugated roofing is secured over the plywood (figure A)
- The team measures and cuts T1-11 plywood for the doors (figure B)s, then drills door halves into the corners of the door frames.
- Each door half is cut to the correct length, then top and bottom strap-hinges are added to enable the doors to swing open.
- A square is cut for a window, then a pine encasement is added. A window is created from glass blocks and added to the frame.
- The team adds the finishing details (window shade material) and grinds the edges of and nailheads smooth.
Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - The Blue Team has a lot to accomplish in the last couple of hours. They first rip T1-11 for the walls and use a hand saw to remove excess plywood at the top (figure C).
- A 2 x 6 is used as a template for 96" rafters. All rafters are placed at a 7 degree angle 16" on-center.
- Before the rafters are nailed into place, joist hangers are added at the back of the header to support the rafters. In addition, the team attaches a runner board across the main beam (opposite the header) for the rafters to sit on.
- The team notches the bottom corner of each rafter to sit more securely on the support beam.
- Next, the team cuts 2 x 4s into two 94" pieces and two 40" pieces for the frame of the door. An additional 2 x 4 is measured and cut for diagonal placement across the door.
- The door frame is assembled and covered with T1-11 plywood.
- Corrugated roofing is added to the structure (figure D), and a track and roller system is secured to the door frame.
- Excess material is removed from the doors to accommodate the track and roller system.
- Plexiglas is attached to the roof of the nose area, and the doors are attached to the tracks.
Score Summary: It was a tough decision for the judges. The scoring was amazingly close -- and the judges seemed to like the design, execution and creativity of both projects. But in the end, the scores selected the winning team -- and the Red Team receives the higher score. In lieu of the projects being donated to charity, the teams requested that a donation be made to the Air Force Aid Society. Base scores are determined using a 1-10 scale, 10 being the highest.
