    Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • The team places two 70" pieces of pine and two 73" pieces of pressure-treated wood into a square. The team uses the pieces to create a square hanger doorway.

    • Next, the team assembles two 124" pieces of pressure-treated wood and two 7" pieces of pine into a rectangle and drills the pieces together with screws.

    • Then, the team places ten 70"pieces an equal distance apart within the rectangle frame (figure A). All pieces are drilled into the frame to secure.

    • The team makes a second identical frame using the remaining 12 pieces of pine and 2 pieces of pressure-treated wood.

    • Synthetic roofing material is cut with table saw, then sprayed with red, white and blue paint (figure B).

    Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • First, the team cuts a 2x4 into three small 12" sections, then nails them between two 8' long 2 x 4s to create corner posts that will be used later.

    • Once the top and bottom frames have been squared, the team removes temporary braces to begin building the walls.

    • The team starts with the right wall, using the 94" 2 x 4 already laid out for the base. The corner post is nailed to the 94" side of the base, on the end where the door will go. The team nails the 94" side of the top frame to the same corner post on the remaining end.

    • A 2 x 4 measuring 84" long is nailed to the opposite end of the corner posts to complete the box frame for the right wall.

    • Five additional 2 x 4s are nailed within the frame at 16" apart (figure C). Each piece is measured then cut 2" shorter than the preceeding wall stud.

    • Once the right wall frame has been completed, the team repeats the same procedure to create the left wall.

    • Then, the team nails 2 x 4 pieces 28-1/2" long to the corner posts so they point towards the door area. After both walls have been constructed, both walls are raised (figure D) and connected by temporary crossbeams.

    • Next, the team begins creating the structure for the backside of the hanger -- known as the "nose" area on the base. The team cuts 2 x 4 pieces for the sides of the angles half-octagon, then cuts the support beams.
