    The Project: A Lawnmower "Hanger"

    The Timeframe: 8 hours (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.)

These guys have spent plenty of time around airplane hangers, but now it's time to build a hanger for something much smaller: a lawnmower. Do they have the discipline and skill to get the job done? We'll soon find out -- but first, let's meet the teams!

    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • After designing a rectangular shed with curved roof and double door entrance and exit, the Red Team measures the lawn tractor (figure A) to determine the hanger's final size.

    • Next, the team measures then uses the miter saw to cut 24 pieces of pine 2 x 4s measuring 70".

    • Then, the team cuts pressure-treated 2 x 4s into 4 pieces that are 73" each (figure B) and 4 pieces that are 124" each.

    • After determining flexibility, the team selects plywood that will become the curved roof. The team also inspects and tests corrugated roofing material.

    • The team begins construction on the rectangular hanger.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Blue Team measures the lawn tractor during the design process, then conceives an octagonal building with sliding doors -- modeled after an Air Force hanger.

    • With the design concept in place, the team sets the miter saw at 22-1/2" (figure C) and miters angles on the ends of two 2 x 4s that are 94" long; two pieces 43" long and one 2 x 4 measuring 76" long. These pieces will be used to construct the bottom frame.

    • Next, the team connects the 94" long piece with the 43" long piece and nail a temporary brace where the two pieces meet. This will hold the frames together while the team set angles and squares the bottom and top frame.

    • After finding that the angles are incorrect (figure D), the team has to reset the angle.

    • Then, the team miters the ends of additional 2x4s at a 22-1/2" angle to build a top frame identical to the bottom.
