The Blue Team's whimsical, winning carousel-inspired design.

    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • With only a few hours left, the Blue Team cranks up the volume! First, the team measures and cuts a 2 x 8 piece of pine into two 35" pieces to create a drink table in the middle of the swing.

    • One of the pieces is painted blue, then four circles (which will act as cupholders) are cut in the unpainted piece (figure A), before the piece is painted red.

    • The two pieces are attached together, then attached to the middle of the swing.

    • The team secures the top beam to the A-frame with bolts, the measures and cuts 2 x 4 pressure-treated wood into four 45" long cross-braces. The braces are attached at 45-degree angles in the corners of the A-frame, then hammered into the top beam and posts.

    • Rope molding is measured and cut to fit the seat backs. The molding is painted gold before being nailed into place, covering staple marks on fabric.

    • Next, the team cuts a piece of plywood is 11-1/2" and paints it blue.

    • Brass hangers are attached on the underside of the plywood to create a wine rack. The rack is nailed to the top of the mini-fridge/microwave storage base.

    • Then, the team attached the seat backs and seat with lag bolts, and measure, cuts, sands and attaches the armrests.

    • Holes are drilled for the eye bolts that will connect the swing to chains and s-hooks.

    • The white star motif is stamped onto the arm rests and middle table (figure B).

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

The remaining pieces of the adult-sized swing are assembled. Six 1 x 2s are cut to 42" and attached to the back grame. Two 1 x 4 pieces are cut to 16", then 2 x 2 notches are cut out to fit over the back frame. One piece is connect to the armrest.

    • Next, holes 1" in diameter are drilled for the chain to pass through the armrest.

    • The horses are embellished with red or white fabric manes, "washer" eyes and brown vinyl ears. Mouths are painted on.

    • The masking tape is pulled from the umbrella and white stripes are added.

    • Two child-sized versions of the adult swings are created.

    • Next, the team drills holes into the top beam (figure C) and adds six eye bolts. Washers are used for extra support.

    • Chains are added to the adult swing armrest in a triangle pattern and attached to the eyebolts. The same technique is used to secure chains to the child-sized swings.

    • Sides are attached to all the swings (figure D), and a hole is drilled for the umbrella.

    • The adult swing is attached to the frame, and the umbrella -- complete with lights -- is added to complete the carousel effect.

    The Final Moment

Although the Red Team ran into structural snafus and often worried about time, they still finished their patriotic swing within the time limit. The Red Team, however, still hadn't completed their ambitious "amusement-park" swing by the time the horn sounded.

    Score Summary:

Both teams designed swing with more style than function. The Red Team received high scores in design, but it was the Blue Team's creative effort -- even unfinished -- that won the top score!

Base scores are determined using a 1-10 scale, 10 being the highest. For complete details on the judging/scoring process, click here.
