    Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • After the Red Team cut the posts at 22-degree angles, the two posts are placed together to form the top of an "A". The other posts are positioned in the same manner, before the team connects all with lag bolts.

    • The top beam is placed on top of the posts (figure A) and secured with angle brackets and lag bolts.

    • Then, the team measures and cuts pine 2 x 4s to make the back seats. Six 24" pieces and four 35" pieces are cut.

    • The team creates a grid from three 24" pieces and two of the 35" pieces, which are then nailed into place. The same technique is employed using the remaining pieces.

    • Blue fabric is stapled to the seat backs, then stuffed with filler.Next, the team measures and cuts a 2 x 8 piece of lumber to 12-1/2" and angles it to fit top posts -- creating a "gossit" that will aid the metal brackets in providing structural support.

    • To create the patriotic motif, the team cuts a foam star shape, dips it in white paint, then stamps it onto the blue seat covers (figure B).

    • To evenly support weight between the two posts, the team measures and cuts a 4 x 6 into two pieces 53" each. The beam is attached between the two posts to form an "A" frame.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • Seat sides are painted with flat white paint (figure C) before the adult swing frame is constructed.

    • First, the team cuts four 1 x 4 pieces to 20" for the seat frame, then four more are cut to 11" for the armrest frame (figure D. Two 16.5" poplars are cut for the back frame.

    • The armrest piece is put in between two seat pieces and then another armrest piece is put on the outside of the two seat pieces. These four pieces are screwed together using an eyehook screw. The seat frame is put in between the two seat pieces and screwed together using the eye hook screw. This is repeated for the other side.

    • Whimsical designs are painted on the adult swing sides, and the seat is finished. Notches are cut into 1x6 pieces cut to 42" (will be used as bench). The pieces are screwed into the seat frame.

    • Next, the team cuts a 1 x 2 piece of poplar to 42" and adds between the 1 x 6 pieces. All boards are sanded smooth and the horse-shaped side panels are painted.
