    Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • With the seat frame complete, the team considers a cover. First, the team measures and cuts a thick fabric larger than the actual seat. Then, the team tightly wraps the fabric around the frame and secures it with staples (figure A).

    • Next, the team measures and cuts pressure-treated 4 x 6s to build an A-frame to support the swing (figure B). Four posts are cut to 85"; one beam is cut to 122".

    • One of the four posts is cut at a 45-degree angle to lay flat on the ground. The other ends are cut at 22-degree angles.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • With part of the swing frame assembled, the Blue Team turns the frame upright to attach the opposite side.

    • Lag bolts are used to attach the remaining legs to the top on the opposite side, then remaining 2 x 4s are screwed into place for support.

    • All the horse templates are cut with a jigsaw, then sanded (figure C).

    • Then, the team uses a circular saw to cut 4 x 4 posts to 20". These are used to create side-to-side stability. Lag bolts are used to attach.

    • A 4 x 4 piece is attached on both sides of the 4 x 6 top. A 4 x 4 also sits atop the 2 x 4 brace.

    • The team applies red paint to outer (figure D) and inner surfaces of the umbrella before cutting and sanding the "adult-sized" seats.

    • After the seats are sanded, a hole measuring 2" in diameter is added to the bottom to house the suspension chain.
