    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 1 a.m.)

    • The Red Team designs a hammock-style double swing supported by a sturdy wooden frame. A table will be built between the seats, and will include drink holders. A special cart will house a mini-fridge and microwave, and the entire swing will be painted in a patriotic motif.

    • With the design in place, the team measures and cuts 2 x 8s into two 72" pieces and four 35" pieces.

    • Next, the team uses the pieces to cut a rectangle that will serve as the seat base. Additional pieces are added within the rectangle to increase structural support (figure A). Seat beams are secured to the base with right-angle brackets.

    • Then, the team cuts and assembles pieces for the mini-fridge and microwave base (figure B).

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Blue Team wants the feel of a whimsical carousel. Their swing design includes two child seats and one adult seat. It will include a canopy umbrella and unique decorative touches.

    • The team starts by drawing a template of a horse for the side panels of the child-sized swings. After being re-sized a couple of times, the team draws the horse template 23" high, 20" wide at the nose, and 9" wide at the bottom. Then, the team cuts four pieces for the two swings.

    • Next, the Blue Team uses a circular saw to cut four 4 x 4 pressure-treated posts to 96" each. These pieces will be used to create an A-frame structure for the swings.

    • Then, the team creates a template for the adult swing. Plywood is cut to create curved panels for the sides, then a 4 x 6 post is cut to 146" for the top of the A-frame. Two holes are countersunk into one side of the 4 x 6. Lag screws attach the piece to the 4 x 4 legs. A washer is used to support each screw.

    • Masking tape is used to section off the umbrella's outer (figure C) and inner surfaces.

    • Braces are cut for the A-frame sides (figure D) from 2 x 4s and are screwed into place.
