The Red Team joked about winning extra points for the Warehouse Warriors logo incorporated into its tabletop. But with a creative design incorporating the convenience of two tabletops, it didn't need any extra points! The Red Team's design is declared a winner!

All joking aside, the Blue Team created a handsome table. The judges were impressed by the team's creative use of materials, as well as the glass table top design. Although the Blue Team didn't win the battle, the table is a winner in its own right.

    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • With only a few short hours left, the Red Team works to assemble the seats and add the finishing details to their project. First, the team cuts 2 x 4s for fit atop the bench frame and attaches with a nail fun.

    • Next, two 30" seats are cut from 2 x 6 cedar and attached to the 2 x 4s to form seats for the smaller table. The team then sands the seats smooth with an electric sander.

    • Cobblestone tiles are added to fill in the space around the mosaic tile logo on the larger table. The entire table is grouted and finished, then moonrock tiles (figure A) are added to the smaller table.

    • L-brackets are used to attach the tabletops to the frames, then smaller cedar pieces are added to created a "railroad" effect on the connecting bench.

    • The sides of the tables are stained (figure B) and cleaned.

    • Umbrellas are added and accent rope lights are attached to the table sides.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • The Blue Team finishes benches for the table, then sands pine pieces that are used for the tabletop.

    • The Blue Team also uses a lap joint to support the tabletop, then the island is secured to support beams with screws hidden underneath (figure C).

    • Pine pieces are added around the island to create a basketweave design.

    • Next, the team attaches bench legs to bench seats (figure D).

    • Rope lighting is mounted underneath the glass blocks, then the team cuts and adheres the curved edge to the tabletop.

    • The team quickly stains the table, then drills holes into table to house twin umbrellas. The umbrellas are braced by slotted strapping attached to the bottom of the table legs.

    The Final Moment

The teams finish their projects, check out the competing designs, then sit on the sidelines while the judge tally the scores.

Score Summary: While the judges loved the Blue Team's design and interesting use of materials, it was the Red Team's "space station" design that won high marks for creativity.

Base scores are determined using a 1-10 scale, 10 being the highest. For complete details on the judging/scoring process, click here.
