Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.) - The Red Team is paying special attention to the sturdiness of its design. The team uses a circular saw to cut notches in four 80" 2 x 4 pieces. Each notch is 2" x 2", and is clean-up the middle part of each notch.
- Next, the 4 x 4 posts are screwed into metal tie frames. The 2 x 4 braces (figure A) are attached to the posts using lag screws, then fitted over the other 2 x 4s. Two are placed on each side, then crossed to form an "x".
- Then, the team cuts 2 x 4 pieces to 127" long and attaches the pieces with lag screws just below the "x" frame. This assembly is the beginning of a bench that will connect the large and small tables.
- Seats for the large table are cut from cedar to 20" each. Each piece is cut at an angle.
- Next, four 4 x 4 pressure-treated posts are cut to 17-1/2" and attached to the middle of the 2 x 4 braces at the ends (figure B). The cedar seat pieces are nailed to each posts with a nail gun.
- The smaller table frame is constructed using the same technique employed for the large table. The two tables are connected by the bench, then grout is added to the tabletop Warehouse Warriors mosaic.
Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.) - The Blue Team is creating sturdy legs as well! First, the team uses a table saw to rip 2" x 6" redwood pieces down to 2" x 3".
- White framing tracks are hammered along top and bottom of table leg frames to hold glass blocks in place. White spacers and glue adhere glass blocks into the side of the table leg frames figure C).
- Next, the square blocks are repositioned on the table legs before the team moves on to create benches. After pieces for bench legs are cut, some of the ends are mitered.
- The legs of the bench are glued together in a design that mirrors the table legs. Blocks are glued to bottom of bench legs.
- Pine pieces are added to each side of the tabletop for support -- and will be removed later.
- Meanwhile, the team uses a hand saw and chisel to notch the leg frames and create a lap joint at the support beams. Two notches are cut and chiseled into the center of each support beam (figure D).
- Wood filler is used to cover any gaps or spaces, then the team nails molding to the top of the island frame.
- A planer is used to remove any factory markings from the pine surfaces.
