The Teams: Two teams of dental professionals: the Extractors (the Red Team) vs. the Mighty Molars (the Blue Team) The Project: A computer workstation The Timeframe: 8 hours (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.) These teams know about drilling in the dental office, but what about on the warehouse floor? It's time to find out! Let's meet the teams: Red Team Andy Levine Kelly Herbs Al Hollis Blue Team Pat McGuirk Carol Anne Tessitore Sarah Melo Warrior Team Trivia: The two team captains, Pat McGuirk and Andy Levine, were in dental school together and have remained competitive throughout their friendship. Their competitive spirit will only add to the excitement of the battle! Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) - The Red Team checks out the warehouse for supplies and designs an angled desk using pre-fabricated cabinets for support. Glass blocks will elevate the computer monitor, and a mini-fridge and microwave will be housed underneath the workstation.
- First, the team drills a square at the back of the smaller pre-assembled cabinet. The square will allow the computer cords to be strung from the CPU to the monitor.
- Next, the team measures and cuts 3/4" red oak into two 8' pieces using a table saw (figure A).
- A 45-degree angle is cut on each desktop piece with the hand saw. The team clamps the pieces to hold in place (figure B).
Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) - The Blue Team's concept includes an arch design. Pre-fabricated drawers will be customized to hold a printer. The team's design will also include a sliding shelf for the CPU, as well as bookshelves.
- First, the team focuses on the drawers. A light green paint will be used for the base coat, and cream accents will be added.
- Next, the team removes all drawers from the cabinets, flips the cabinets over and cuts the base off each (figure C) to make the base standard desk height of 30".
- To create the desktop, sanded oak plywood is cut 30" across from center, with diagonals cut at 32" inches on the left side and 31-1/4" on the right. A fence is set up to guide the hand saw and create a straight diagonal cut.
- The team then uses the power tools to remove drawer framing and unused slide tracks, before painting the drawer fronts with green spray paint (figure D).
Ed's tip: Laminate, often used for projects like this one, comes in 4' x 8' sheets. To cut, shears should be used, with gloves and goggles worn for safety. Laminate glue should be used to adhere the piece to the work surface, and bullnose molding used to cover the edges. Want to know more about the products used on Warehouse Warriors?
