Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.) - The Red Team continues with its fine woodworking techniques. After cutting the 3/4" rabbets, the team cuts a 3/4" dado in the middle of the side pieces (figure A), to allow a middle shelf to slide securely into place.
- Next, the team measures the width of the track shelving and cuts 2 dadoes the same width along the inside of each side board. The side dadoes will support the metal track that will allow shelves to be adjustable.
Ed's Tip: Metal tracks can be nailed directly into wood to hold them securely in place. The tracks come with clips that snap into individual grooves on the track. The tracks are first cut to the correct length and secured in place. Then, the clips are snapped into place to support the shelf that will rest atop the clips. Make sure clips are a good tight fit. Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.) - The Blue Team uses a power hand drill to secure two 1 x 3s together and create a corner frame (figure B). The technique is repeated to create three additional corners.
- Next, the team secures two 1 x 3s together with screws to bridge between corners at the bottom and top and create the front of the bookcase. The same technique is used to create the back surface of the frame.
- Eight 18" pieces are created from 1 x 3s and the pieces are added to the inside and outside of each corner. (The front side of the frame will flip over, then attach into place at the corners where the 18" 1 x 3s were nailed into place.)
