The Teams: The Red Team consists of three southern gentlemen, calling themselves the "Tamarack Three". The opposing Blue Team (consisting of three proud poets) takes its name straight from Shakespeare: Friends, Romans and Countrymen.

The Project: A bookcase with class!

    The Timeframe: 8 hours (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.)

Both teams consist of experienced woodworkers, carpenters and do-it-yourselfers. Let's meet the teams:

    Red Team

    Ed Todd
    Joe Memory
    George Bostic

    Blue Team

    Marty Pellegrino
    Neil Olfuson
    Roman Sharf

Ed's Tip: When building a bookcase, extra weight at the base will increase safety by keeping the bookcase from tipping. As an additional precaution, the bookcase can also be attached to the wall.

    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Red Team decides on a traditional design with fine woodworking details: framed with rabbets, dadoes and adjustable shelves.

    • The team gets started by using a table saw to rip 3/4" finished red oak plywood for the sides, top, bottom and shelves of the bookcase.

    • Next, the Red Team uses a router saw to cut 3/4" rabbets (figure A) into the top edges of the sides, top and bottom pieces. This will allow the pieces to interlock and creates sturdiness.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Blue Team takes a more unique approach: designing a 6' x 6' bookcase with a pinwheel door that spins open.

    • After gathering supplies from the warehouse, the team gets busy. The team first rips 1" x 12" birch into 8 pieces measuring 1" x 3" (figure B).

    • The team uses a table saw to cut off one end of each piece, then cuts each piece to 6' long.
