The distinct appearance, mix of materials and original recipe make the Blue Team's design a winner.

    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • Time is running out for the Red Team. The team uses the remaining hours to add trim and paint. The team starts by creating a tile border around the edges of the center shelf. Decorative tile trim is adhered to the edges of the top shelf using wall and tile board adhesive. The adhesive is also used for the application of 3 x 3 tile sheets.

    • With the tile in place, the team mixes paint and paints the wooden frame a light olive green.

    • The team measures and cuts pieces for the wine rack (figure A). Dowels are used to support the shelves of the wine rack and create sides. The wine rack is assembled and secured with wood glue and nails.

    • To fill the areas between the tiles, the team mixes tile grout with olive green paint. Grout is then applied over the tile to fill the cracks. Paint thinner is used to clean the paint-grout mixture away from the tiles . (Note: water, not paint, should always be used to mix tile grout.)

    • The wine rack is painted olive green, then attached with "s" hooks to the inside top of the baker's rack.

    • The team isn't finished adding decorative touches yet. The team decides to add rope molding between the top arch and bottom shelf. The molding is cut with a miter saw, then painted yellow. The team attaches the molding to the frame with finishing nails.

    • Finally, the team paints three decorative medallions and uses a nail gun to add them to the top arch (figure B). The bottom shelf and frame is painted yellow to complete the project.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • With the deadline looming, the Blue Team working on sanding their custom baker's rack and adding a finish. First, the team power drills a 1" x 3" piece along the top front side.

    • Next, the team uses masking tape along the edges of copper sheets used as the back surface of the rack. Nails are drilled into the copper sheet to secure them to the frame.

    • The team uses 3-1/2" screws to attach the arch along the top back of rack. Five pieces of 1" x 3" lumber are used for the door of the storage base (figure C).

    • One 1" x 3" is nailed to the backside, and hinges and a knob are attached (figure D) for easy opening of the storage area.

    • The project is sanded, and a router is used to round the edges of the top front panel.

    • Nail are covered with putty, and the team stains the rack.

    • To complete the project, copper tubes are sanded and covered with a polyurethane coating product to prevent oxidization.
