Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
- The team sands all the pieces to be used for the wooden frame, then uses finishing nails and a nail gun, to assemble the wooden frame before adding it to the metal frame (figure A).
- Caster wheels are attached to bun foots with finishing nails (figure B). A bun foot is nailed to each corner on the underside of the bottom of the rack.
Ed's Tip: Casters, which come in a variety of sizes, can be easily added by first pre-drilling a hole, then screwing the farrell into the pre-drilled hole. Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)
- The Blue Team decides to use copper tubing as shelves. The team first measures, then uses a pipe cutter to cut 15 copper pipes to 40" long.
- Then, the team measures and cuts six 1x 3s into 34-1/2" pieces for the corner frames (figure C).
- Holes are drilled into the corner supports for the copper tubing. A 1/3 bit is used to create holes 1/4" deep.
- The back corner frames are constructed by the joining of 1 x 3s with wooden biscuits and glue. A biscuit cutter is used to cut slots for the biscuits (figure D)
Ed's Tip: T-fittings are a great way to easily connect copper pipe pieces. A pipe cutter is used to cut them down to size, the T-fittings are used to join them together, edges are trimmed, and a cap is used to cover the open pipe ends.
