... it's the Blue Team's unique touches that make the difference and win the judges' votes.

Ed's Tip: To easily join PVC pipes on a project such as this, apply primer first. Use plumbing cement on both pieces, then join together and give the joined area a half-twist. Hold together for about 30 seconds for proper sealing.

    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • This band of brothers gets busy adding the final details to their project. First, the team attaches tiles to plywood with tile adhesive, then attaches custom moulding to the edge of countertop. The moulding is pre-cut with a 45-degree edge on both ends before the edges are routed (figure A).

    • The team installs the refrigerator, then uses a sponge to apply grout to tiles (figure B).

    • Finally, the team removes excess grout and attaches a foot rail to the bottom of the bar.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • The brothers in blue are also trying to beat the clock as they add their finishing touches. First, they cut 1" x 3" oak trim to attach to the plywood sides (figure C).

    • Tile are attached to the countertop with tile adhesive (figure D), and a grout float is used to apply grout.

    • After the grout has dried, the team uses a wet sponge to remove the excess and completes its project just as the horn sounds.

    Score Summary:

It's a tough decision for the judges, who appreciate the quality construction of both bars. While the judges agreed the Red Team's bar was more finished in its construction and overall appearance, they gave the higher scores to the Blue Team's creativity and unique design, citing the wine rack, shelf and U-shape as the deciding details.

Base scores are determined using a 1-10 scale, 10 being the highest. For complete details on the judging/scoring process, click here.
