Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - The Red Team moves quickly to complete their project. The team paints the flower boxes (figure A), then notches and installs 4x6 beams to support the roof and swing.
- Next, "bird mouths" are notched into the rafter supports. The rafters are anchored, then red corrugated roofing (figure B) is installed.
- The team attaches the swing using chains that have been bolted to the beams.
- Window trim is painted yellow to match the window boxes before the team adds lattice to the porch, flowers to the window boxes, and battery-powered lighting.
Ed's Tip: For this type of project, battery-powered lights are a safer alternative than electrical lighting. Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - Even as time is running out, the Blue Team is adding more detail to their project. A kitchen nook is added to an inside wall, as well as a knee board (figure C).
- The team finishes the front porch with railing, and the walls with plywood.
- Then, lapse siding (figure D) is created from staggered 1x12s and 1x6s.
- The team attaches the interlocking roofing material, then paints the window trim and adds flower pots.
Ed's Tip: While the interlocking roofing material used comes with rubber seals, a dab of silicone makes the nails go into the holes easier. The Final Moment Both teams created similar designs. While the Red Team ("The Blues Builders") had a smaller -- yet polished presentation, the Blue Team ("Hammered") offered a design almost twice in size. The judges have their work cut out for them. Although the Red Team didn't completely finish their playhouse interior -- as the Blue Team had -- it was their careful attention to detail that won the judges' votes.
