    Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • The Red Team anchors the walls to the floor using lag screws, then measures and cuts 4x6 pressure-treated lumber (figure A) for a porch swing.

    • The door frame is secured with lag screws, then the team constructs a ceiling from 4x6s.

    • The team covers the exterior with wood panels (figure B), then begins construction on flower boxes that will be attached outside each window.

    • To construct the window boxes, the team cuts a long piece of wood from which lumber for all three boxes is cut. The sides of each box are angled.

    • After the boxes are constructed, holes are drilled in the bottom surface for proper drainage.

Ed's Tip: For a fun detail, consider creating a handprint or footprint in quick-setting cement. Poor the cement into an old shoebox, then have the child create a handprint, footprint or artistic design. After the cement has set, simply peel the box away.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • After constructing the side frames, the Blue Team builds the front and back wall frames (which will include window framing).

    • A floor frame is laid to create a raised floor in the playhouse interior.

    • Next, two 2x6s are added to the tops of door and windows to create additional strength. A small block of wood -- a "stud" is added to support the head of the house frame.

    • To cover the exterior walls, T-111 is added.

    • The team elects to add Simpson brackets (figure C) to the posts to prevent collapse. A hole is drilled and a lag bolt is inserted. To augment the lag bolt, 16-penny nails are used.

    • Ridge rafters are added to support the roof, then a window is cut from one of the walls (figure D).

    • The team moves on to trim work, beginning by creating window trim.
