The Red Team -- a group of police officers -- call themselves the Blues Builders; while the Blue Team has adopted the moniker "Hammered" -- a name derived from their college days! Let's meet the teams:

    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Red Team develops a 6' x 8' playhouse design, with porch extending from the front. After nailing down its design, the team begins building. First, they begin with the floor. The team uses 2x6s (placed 12" apart for strength) for the playhouse floor.

    • Next, the team attaches composite decking (figure A), starting in the center and working outward. The team secures the decking with decking screws, then saws the ends to leave 3" extending from the sides.

    • A sander is used to smooth nail craters.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Blue Team designs a playhouse a bit more ambitious in scale. After agreeing on a 10' x 12' playhouse with a deck and windows, the team undertakes the challenge. The Blue Team -- like the Red -- uses 2x6s for floor joists, but chooses to set them 16" apart. Lag bolts are used to attach the joists to each end support (figure B), while 16-penny nails are used in the interior.

    • With the floor supports in place, the team moves on to the porch area, where composite decking is installed.

    • The interior floor of playhouse is lined with plywood, then 2x4s are used to create high wall frames.

Ed's Tip: When building a plaform floor, joists should be a maximum of 16" apart to ensure stability.
