Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.) - The Red Team's design starts coming together. First, the team uses wall and tile-board adhesive to secure tiles around the fireplace (figure A). For placement, 1/4" spacers are used as guides.
- Next, the team selects fabric to be used for the throw rug and sews the pieces.
- Stained rope molding is nailed to the mantel edge.
- Then six large mirrored tiles are adhered to plywood (figure B), which is cut and framed with the "antiqued" molding.
Ed's Tip: With a gas fireplace, it's a good idea to have smoke detectors in your home that are in excellent working condition. One way to remember to check them is to perform the check on your birthday. And although smoke detectors are important, keep in mind that an equally important invesment is a carbon monoxide detector. Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.) - The Blue Team begins work on unique details. First, the team uses a scroll saw to cut woodland creatures from plywood, which are then painted.
- Next, crown molding is cut for use under the mantel (figure C).
- A 1x6 shelf is attached to the top edge of the 1x12 base (figure D), then dentil molding is secured at a 45-degree angle.
