    Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • The Red Team decides to build recessed display boxes into the wall. They begins by cutting 1x4 oak for the frames and mitering the corners to 45 degrees. Copper sheeting will be used as a backing inside the box frames. Before adding the frames, recessed boxes are cut into the wall using a reciprocating saw (which will minimize scratching).

    • Next, wall sconces are painted (figure A) and secured to the wall to provide uplighting.

    • Gold paint is added over the red mantel molding, which is then covered with a coat of red-oak stain to create an "antiqued" look (figure B). In addition, the team stains the oak frames for the recessed boxes.

    • The Red Team is sticking to its plan and sews curtains that will cascade down each outer edge of the wall.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • The Blue Team begins adding details by nailing molding to the wall.

    • To support the trees and add an accent, small bushes are cut from plywood (figure C), then painted.

    • Next, 1x4s are attached beside tiles along the side of the fireplace (figure D).

    • The team creates a mantel base by attaching a 1x12 beside the tiles along the fireplace top.

    • Two pieces of 1x3 finished pine are used -- along with molding -- to create a chair railing.

    • Decorative copper is added to the center of tiles (figure E) as an accent and is secured with hot glue.
