The Teams: A team of family and friends (the Red Team) battles against a team of Las Vegas "highrollers" (the Blue Team). The Project: A challenge to build the coziest fireplace surrounds The Timeframe: 8 hours (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.) The Blue Team members are pretty comfortable building and completing home improvement projects, but the Red Team's "High Rollers" believe Lady Luck will be on their side. Let's meet the teams! Red Team Porter Alexander Matt Alt Lora Kimelrick Blue Team Steve Brigham Lenny King Phil Valentine Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) The Red Team Rope designs a contemporary fireplace surround, with a large framed mirror and two recessed boxes. For accents, the team plans on adding tiles, sconces, a throw rug, pillows and bench. - First, the team paints rope trim molding with red spray paint (figure A).
- Next, the team stacks two pieces of 1x8 oak for a mantel and nails the pieces together. The edges of the mantel are angled to prevent injuries and provide a more finished appearance.
- Then the team places the decorative mantel supports closer together to create more stability (figure B) and support for the heavy mantel.
- For the wall color, the Red Team custom mixes a gray-green color and uses a roller to apply to the wall surrounding the fireplace.
Ed's Tip:There are many different types of moldings to choose from, so it's important to select the right type for the job. Baseboard moldings protect the wall from being marred at the base, while chair molding is typically installed at chair level to protect the wall from chair dents. Crown molding is installed where the walls meet the ceiling and provide a finished appearance, while often hiding unattractive finish work. (Rope molding and dentil molding are used for a decorative appearance and are often used as trim on woodworking projects. Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.) The Blue Team wanted to focus on bringing the outdoors in and re-create the feeling of sitting around a campfire on vacation. Their design includes a large Victorian manel with cutouts of trees and forest animals. - First the team gets started by mixing paint to a dark gray to be used on the wall surrounding the fireplace.
- After the paint application, the Blue Team draws outlines of trees on plywood, cuts the shapes using a jigsaw, then applies paint to the tree shapes (figure C).
- Next, 12" x 12" tiles are used to trim fireplace. Because of the time limits, the team chooses to secure the tile with a liquid bonding adhesive (figure D), rather than the tile mastic that would normally be used.
- Due to the complications that using the adhesive causes, the team uses tape to secure the tiles to the wall while they adhere.
