The Red Team puts the finishing touches on their project before the horn sounds.

The Blue Teams project tugged at the judges' patriotism, but the center island was deemed a bit impractical.

    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • With only two hours left, the Red Team has a lot of features left to engineer! The team finished the laminate by trimming the excess away from the tabletop edges (figure A), then begins construction on the wavy back benches.

    • Next, the team uses leftover pieces from the tabletop (figure B) for the back of the benches. Two 30" 4x4s are used for the backs, and two 16" 4x4s are used for the seats.

    • All four of the wavy pieces are angled to produce more support, then nailed to the back. The seats are nailed into place.

    • After completing the benches, the team adds cross braces to the top to turn the wood frame into a grid -- which will support glass blocks.

    • The glass blocks are locked into place and the wooden brace is nailed into the top with the assistance of a nail drill.

    • To complete the project, the Red Team carefully places the horizontal blocks in the wooden brace and uses rubber strips and caulks to secure.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • The Blue Team begins finishing their project by trimming the bench with red oak and nailing the bench top to the legs.

    • Angled supports are nailed to bench legs (figure C).

    • Next, the team cuts tiles for use on the island. Grey tiles are applied to the edges, while patriotic red, white and blue tiles are used to create a decorative flag in the center of the top.

    • The tiles are glued in place (figure D), and holes are pre-drilled into the island (from underneath) for easy removal and attachment.

    The Final Moment

It's time to put the tools down and prepare for judging!

While the judges loved the Blue Team's patriotic touches and unusual twists on the early American style table, they felt it's size, weight and shape were a bit impractical. The Red Team's fun, unusual shape and creative use of materials won the judges over.
