    Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • The Red Team's table starts taking shape. First, the team notches and attaches the table legs to the "sunken" base (figure A).

    • With the legs in place, the team moves on to the wavy tabletop. The team cuts a 15-7/8" hole in the top.

    • Next, the 2 wavy tops are joined together with wood glue. Laminate is fused to the edges with a warm iron (figure B) to give a finished appearance.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • Meanwhile, the Blue Team creates braces for the table legs using 4x4 posts. Both ends of each brace (figure C) is cut at a 45-degree angle, then nailed to legs and underside of the table.

    • Next, the team stains the table and builds a removable island for the center. The top piece is created by cutting the red oak plywood to 5" x 18".

    • The team uses 1x6 red oak for the island's sides, which are nailed to the top (figure D).

    • These tool and die makers are used to working with the smallest of details, and decide to attach pre-milled decorative trim. The trim ends are mitered at the ends, then attached to the tabletop (figure E) with nails.

    • Legs for the bench are cut to 18" long and sanded.

    • Then, the team screws in remaining 2x2 support posts, and attaches two poplar 1x6s that have been cut to 7" long.
