    Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • With the lumber cut for the legs, it's time to start making waves! The Red Team chalks a wavy design onto the red oak plywood (figure A), then uses a jigsaw to cut two layers of the plywood for a thick tabletop.

    • Then, adhesive veneer is used to finish the edges of the tabletop and is fused to the edges with a warm iron.

    • Next, the team routes the table legs.

    • The team decides against using tiles for the center of the tabletop, and decides to add glass blocks that will complement their contemporary design.

    • Next, the team drills a 2x6 into the 2x4 to create a table brace. The pieces are nailed together, then reinforced with screws.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.)

    • The Blue Team uses a table saw to cut four 4x4 posts to 30" lengths for table legs. After finding their measurements to be slightly off, the team re-measures and re-cuts the legs before securing them to the frame (figure B) with long screws.

Ed's Tip: When working with long screws, drill a few holes with a drill bit to create a channel for the screws to fit in. Coating the screw with a little soap or oil will ease the screw into the drilled hole.
