The Teams: Two teams skilled with power tools -- employees of a tool manufacturing facility (Waterloo Industries)

The Project: A kitchen booth with kick

    The Timeframe: 8 hours (9 a.m. - 5 p.m.)

These guys not only know their way around tools-stocked warehouses, they've all undertaken home repair projects. Let's meet the teams:

    Red Team

    Jim Reid
    Robert Tylar
    Alan Mangrich

    Blue Team

    Raymond Hardage
    Danny Hufstedler
    Darren Hufstedler

Warrior Team Trivia: Red Team member Alan Mangrich says he has remodeled all three homes his family has lived in.

    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • After deciding on a contemporary, wavy-edged table with matching seat, the Red Team picks up the power tools and forges ahead.

    • First, the team uses a table saw to cut 2 x 6s for the table base (figure A) and 4x4s for the table legs (figure B)

Ed's Tip: Instead of constructing legs for a project like this one, consider purchasing a pre-assembled pedestal at a restaurant or home supply store. These can be added by simply securing the base to the tabletop using screws.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Blue Team's design is based on the American flag -- a traditional early American-style table made of tile. The team plans, then checks out the warehouse for materials that can be used. After finding copper sheeting on the shelves (figure C), the team decides it wants to incorporate the material into its design.

    • Next, the team moves to the construction area, measuring and cutting the table top from 8x4 red oak plywood.

    • To allow for the trim that will be used, 2-3/4" is remove from the ends (figure D).

    • To create the frame, the team marks the underside of tabletop and nails 2x2s to the marked area.
