Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - The Red Team begins adding their finishing touches. First they attach railings, then cut and attach balusters (figure A).
- With time remaining, the team decides to build and secure a bench (figure B) to the gazebo to finish the structure. The Red Team, who worked quickly, finds time to spare -- and spends the last half hour of the competition "testing" the new bench for comfort and stability!.
Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.) - To finish its project, the Blue Team finds it must work quickly in the last few hours. First they cut a center post to which the rafters will be attached. The team attaches the rafters to the center post (figure C) first, then to the gazebo frame.
- The team cuts and attaches railings and balusters, then attaches lattice to the roof (figure D). The team members want an open feel to their gazebo design -- with lots of light allowed in -- and decide to alternate the lattice placement.
- For a finishing touch, the Blue Team adds decorative cross braces.
The Final Moment: Although the Red Team finished their rectangular gazebo early, the Blue Team needed most of the allotted time to finish their octagonal design. Both teams complete their projects within the time limit, and Ed Del Grande sounds the horn to end the competition. Now the teams -- who take great pride in their work -- must face judgment and final scoring. Score Summary: The judges -- who normally judge on design, execution and creativity -- unofficially check the gazebos for structural stability. The judges examine each project for its ability to withstand wind, weather and weight. Both teams are praised for their skillful execution. Although the judges find the Red Team's gable roof and bench (figure E) pleasing, it's the Blue Team's staggered lattice roof panels and decoratively notched rafters (figure F) that receive the high score! Base scores are determined using a 1-10 scale, 10 being the highest. For complete details on the judging/scoring process, click here.
