    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Red Team leaves the "drawing board" pretty quickly with a plan in place. The team decides on a simple, rectangular design that can easily be completed in limited time.

    • The team cuts the wood for the floor frame and joists.

    • Composite decking boards and support posts are cut.

    • The team uses galvanized nails and screws to begin construction of the frame (figure A).

    • After the frame is constructed, the team adds floor joists and support posts.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • While the Red Team is using most of the first two hours to build, the Blue Team is using their time to create a meticulous plan for an octagonal gazebo.

    • Finally the team decides on a design and moves on to gather materials. First they mark the building area with a chalk line (figure B).

    • The team begins cutting wood to be used for the octagonal frame and joists.
