    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • The pressure is on, and the Red Team begins the last two hours of the competition by checking the holes they've cut for the sink and cook top, before beginning to arrange the tile pattern.

    • Next, the surface is prepped with an application of tile adhesive, and the tiles are set into place (figure A).

    • The team mixes and applies grout (figure B), then wipes away the excess.

    • To finish, the team measures and cuts beaded wainscoting and attaches it to the front of the island.

    • Finally, the cook top and sink are inserted into the island's top surface.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • The Blue Team --having encountered a little difficulty with their measurements early in the competition -- now faces limited time. But this team isn't about to give up without a fight to the finish! The team quickly installs glass block (figure C) using a clear silicone adhesive, then resizes sink and cook top holes.

    • The cook top and sink are inserted into the island's surface, but the team finds that time is running out.

    • The Blue Team measures and cuts tiles (figure D) for the cook top area and begins arranging the tiles, but runs out of time before applying tile mastic and grout to secure them. They hope the judges will be lenient and notice their craftsmanship and creativity, rather than the unfinished tile work.
The Final Moment Time's up! The two teams share their finished projects with Ed and the opposing teams, before facing judgment.

    Score Summary:

While judging is always based on three elements (design, execution and creativity) -- this time, a fourth element is unofficially added by one of the judges: functionality. Chef Bruce Bogartz uses food, utensils and plates to determine how well the island would work in a real kitchen.

The judges love the simplicity of the Red Team's design (figure E), as well as its creative mix of materials. However, it's the Blue Team's artistic design and multi-level surfaces (figure F) that wins the high score.

Base scores are determined using a 1-10 scale, 10 being the highest. For complete details on the judging/scoring process, click here.
