    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 1 a.m.)

    • The Red Team begins by creating a concept for a kitchen island that includes a breakfast bar. After some time at the "drawing board", the team discusses the materials available to them and how they can best be utilized in their design (figure A).

    • Next, the team measures the cook top and sink that will be used before measuring and cutting 2 x 4s that will be used for the island's frame.

    • Then, the team uses the 2 x 4s to build two identical frames attached with screws.

    • The top frame, which will have an extended eating area, needs to be slightly larger than the island base. After realizing this, the team resizes and adjusts the bottom frame.

    • After completing the adjustments, the team attaches upright supports to the base to create the island frame (figure B).).

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Blue Team designs an island (figure C) around some pre-assembled cabinetry. Their design features a prep surface, desk area and dining bar. Before completing the design, the team carefully measures the cook tops, sinks and pre-fab cabinets.

    • Next, the team measures and cuts 2 x 4s for three multi-level areas of the island, and begins assembly (figure D) of the island base.
