    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • The Red Team cuts 4' x 8' lattice sheets for the back and sides of the bench. As the lattice is secured, the seat cushion is added to the bench (figure A).

    • Next, the team begins securing the composite deck material to the frame. First, the team pre-drills holes for the nails.

    • Then, the team trims the deck boards using a cordless circular saw. The boards are trimmed at an angle that matches the deck perimeter (figure B)

    • To finish, the team uses a power sander to smooth the nail holes and any rough areas.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • The Blue Team attaches remaining composite decking and sands nail holes and rough areas.

    • Next, the team adds decking to the raised platform.

    • After all decking boards are added, the team adds the finishing touches. Railing is finished and decorative lighting is installed (figure C) before the addition of decorative post caps.

    The Final Moment

When the horn sounds, the hammerin' stops -- but in this case, the two teams have already completed their projects. The teams are allowed a quick viewing of the opposing team's project before the judging begins.

Score Summary: While the judges were impressed with the Blue Team's attention to detail, the raised grilling platform (figure D) and the amount of work accomplished, it was the Red Team's creative deck shape and seating arrangement ( figure E) that earned the title.

Base scores are determined using a 1-10 scale, 10 being the highest. For complete details on the judging/scoring process, click here.
