    Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • The Red Team scraps the swing design and starts over. The swing idea morphs into two benches.

    • With the upright supports still in place, cross braces are added. Two 2 x 6 boards are cut for each bench and attached with screws (figure A).

    • Foam and fabric are cut to the correct size to fit the bench.

    • While the cushions and cover are being sewn, the rest of the team sets out to add floor joists and composite decking.

    • Because of the unusual shape of the deck, the team finds adding support joists troublesome. Their solution? To add joists inside the frame in a diagonal pattern. After adding the floor joists, the team arranges the decking (figure B)

    Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • After the Blue Team adds the 2 x 6 cross supports, composite decking is added (figure C).

    • Next, the team measures and cuts balusters that will be attached to the railing.

    • Then, 2 x 4 railings are attached to the deck before the balusters are added (figure D).
