    Red Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Red Team decides to give their deck a unique shape -- a triangle inspired by the Girl Scout emblem. A swing will be suspended from an arbor-like frame at the rear perimeter of the deck.

    • The team begins measuring and figuring the perfect angle of each 2 x 6 needed to complete the triangular base.

    • Next, a miter saw is used to cut the angles. After a few cuts, the team realizes the measurements are wrong, and has to re-figure and re-cut the 2 x 6s.

    • After the lumber is cut, the pieces are secured at the angled corners with lag screws (figure A).

    • With the angles -- still imprecise -- not fitting together, the team looks for a fix. A scrim is used to fill the front angle of the triangle (figure B).

    • The 2 x 6 for the straight back edge of the base is attached to the other two and attached with lag screws.

    • Cross-joists are added inside the frame to give the deck stability and strength.

    Blue Team Activity Journal (9 a.m. - 11 a.m.)

    • The Blue Team decides on a multi-level deck that showcases the grill. The grill will be 10' x 12', and will be surrounded by rails and balusters. A gate will allow guests to come and go, while keeping Fido and other furry friends away from the food.

    • First, the team uses a chalk line to mark the deck's perimeters onto the warehouse floor, then measures the grill.

    • Next, the team cuts 2 x 6 lumber for the frame and 4 x 4s for upright supports. 12" is left for footers. The team also decides that four of the upright supports need to be 6" higher for the raised grill platform.

    • The team assembles and secures the frame using lag screws, then attaches the 4 x 4 uprights by countersinking lag bolts to hide the hardware.

    • After assembling the frame, the team measures and marks the area (figure C ) where the floor joists will be secured (16-20" apart).

    • After the areas are marked, joist hangers are secured on 12" centers (figure D). Additional joists will be added running in the opposite direction to support the grill platform.
