The judges admired the arbor's excellent craftsmanship and the fact that different types of wood were used throughout. The overall feeling, however, was that this project was too similar to other arbor/swing combination sets available commercially.

The judges were impressed with the creative sandbox table and its relaxed, meditative feel. It was the comfortable chair design (as well as the team's ability to sew), however, that helped give the Red Team the winning edge.

    Red Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • The team runs into trouble with their sling chair design and has to make quick modifications. After modifying the design, they build several matching chairs, adding cross bars on the back of each. (The cross bars were notched by hand to fit together snugly.)

    • Fabric is sewn at each end (figure A), leaving a large pocket through which each seat base and back will slide for assembly (figure B).

    • Base pieces with fabric are attached to the frame.

    • To complete the project, the sandbox table is lined with a permeable liner to allow more water drainage.

    • A handle is added to the top of the table before sand in poured into the base (figure C).

    Blue Team Activity Journal (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)

    • As a finishing touch, the Blue Team measures, cuts and installs railings (figure D) and balusters to give the design a finished appearance.

    • Armrests, cut from 1x4s, were added to the swing (figure E). After the armrests are secured, the team attaches eyebolts to them -- and the swing's base -- to anchor the suspension chain in place.

    • Swing hardware is attached to the overhead support beam (figure F) and the swing is installed.

    The Final Moment

Host Ed Del Grande sounds the horn to call order in the court and signal the end of the competition. Both teams are allowed to cross-examine the opposing team's project before the judges enter.

It's a tough verdict to deliver. Although the judges admired the excellent construction of both teams' projects and the resourceful use of materials, it was the Red Team's creative sandbox table and sling-chair combination that was ruled the winner.
