    Red Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • The Red Team -- after realizing how much they've yet to accomplish -- also decides to split up and add a fold-out lid to the sandbox table while at the same time working on the chairs.

    • They measure and cut redwood to create a lid for the sandbox table -- designed to provide additional seating at the table.

    • Meanwhile, they rip 2x4s into 2x2s of varying lengths -- 25" to 44" -- to create a chair prototype.

    • The team attaches the table lid with hinges, then measures and cuts braces (figure A) that will support the open lids for seating.

    • While the hinges and lids are being attached, one of the team members miters the ends of 44" pieces to create an A-frame chair design. A 25" piece of 2x2 connects each back leg to the front leg, and the back legs of the chair are connected at the bottom of the chair. The front legs are connected 8" above the bottom.

    • To provide drainage, the team drills "weep" holes in the bottom surface of the sandbox table.

    • A 25" piece of 2x2 is used to connect the back legs and support a cross brace (figure B).

    Blue Team Activity Journal (1 p.m. - 3 p.m.)

    • Team members are simultaneously making progress with the arbor and finishing the swing. At this point, they decide to add a deck underneath the swing -- not part of the original design.

    • They measure and cut composite materials for the decking.

    • While the deck is being created, the underside of the swing's seat is reinforced with joists. The frame of the swing, created using 4s vertically attached to a 1x6, is sandwiched (figure C) between horizontal 1x6s for additional strength and a more finished look.

    • The team adds cross braces and decking to the arbor before adding support braces to the corners.

    • Finally, the back and seat of the swing are connected (figure D) with screws.
