Red Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.) - The Red Team moves on to the table assembly. The base, frame, support posts and plywood base are secured (figure A).
- The top frame of the table is attached before the team measures and cuts the redwood that will "wrap" the sides of the table.
- The team attaches the cut redwood to the outside of the sandbox table.
Blue Team Activity Journal (11 a.m. - 1 p.m.) - The Blue Team, realizing the scope of their design, decides to split up. Simultaneously the team members proceed with the building of the arbor and work on the swing.
- After creating a template, the teams cuts decorative rafter ends using a table saw (figure B), carefully cutting a curve on the ends of 12 different beams.
- A router is used to smooth and finish the rafter ends, which are then added to the arbor frame.
- After determining the length of the bench-style swing, the team creates a bench seat frame using 1x6s and 1x8s. The team secures the pieces using 1-1/4" screws.
- Finally, the team measures and cuts cross braces for the base of the arbor.
